Description
- It is the first seafront Olympic Village. It was originally built to house athletes during the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
- The site was a former industrial area that was unused as industries moved away from the urban areas. The Olympic Village was an urban regeneration project for the region of El Poblenou.
- The project aimed to create a lively waterfront mixed-use district. It was designed to reintroduce a connection with the sea, as the areas were previously inaccessible due to industrial activity.
- The urban blocks follow the urban pattern that existed in Barcelona (the Eixample grid) combined with new influences from the Modernism Movement.
- A series of plazas, promenades and fountains create various points of leisure in the site.
- Different architects were appointed for the various blocks, creating a variety in form and character.
- 21 resident centers were distributed throughout the site. They served as points where athletes could avail amenities such as laundry. They became a popular place for informal gatherings during the course of the Games.
- 2 wide avenues crossing the district form axes of the district and are planted with greenery.
