Description
- It is a residential neighbourhood built as an Olympic Village for the 1956 Olympic Games held in Melbourne.
- It was designed as a low-rise suburban neighborhood with sizeable green yards and tree-lined avenues.
- It was inspired by the garden city model. In an era , just after the World War II there was a push towards creating more housing via planned suburban settlements. This project was conceived as a result of this notion.
- The building typologies consisted of 2-3 storey flats and single-story homes. Two building material types- concrete and brick veneer were created.
- The urban blocks are defined yet have an organic design, creating a sense of a community.
- Originally during the games each block housed several countries in some cases, encouraging sportsmanship and interaction amongst the athletes.
- A few blocks were reserved for women, separated by a fence.
- It was meant to alleviate the hosing shortage after the Games. It remains as a public housing area even today, populated by working class and immigrant communities. The area has ageing buildings and facilities. A renewal effort is being made to improve the area currently.
