Description

    ' Project Overview

  • The Ningo Prampram City Extension was initiated by UN Habitat as part of its “Urban Labs” program.
  • The extension is meant to demonstrate a sustainable development model aimed at addressing rapid urbanization and regulating urban sprawl in Accra, Ghana.
  • The masterplan was approved by the Statutory Planning Authority of the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly (NiPDA) on 27 July 2016.
  •

    Site Selection and Location

  • The site was chosen for its proximity to Accra and the coastline.
  • A planned international airport is also nearby, adding to the area's strategic importance.
  •

    Masterplan Structure

  • The masterplan proposes a flexible framework to guide the natural growth of the city, avoiding a rigid, top-down approach.
  • The design features a grid with clusters amidst green arteries, allowing for organic expansion of the city.
  • These clusters are primarily residential with other mixed land uses to help increase housing in the region.
  •

    Sustainability and Flood Management

  • The green areas act as arteries to facilitate the movement of water out of the city, providing a sustainable solution to combat flooding.
  •

    Community Engagement

  • The planning process was approached from the grassroots level, involving discussions with various stakeholders such as residents, local leaders, and district committees to better understand local needs and concerns.
